Geography 2

When I published the first geography lesson, I had no idea it would be such a popular subject. And as with all my subjects, more material came my way the day afterwards. I used a lot of it in the post Location, location, location, but I still have a great deal of material! I'm gathering more and more every day, as I am trying to decide where I want to live for the next twenty years or more. So Here’s an update, with plenty more links on our wonderful world, and how to find it.

THE SWISS GUY

A Swiss guy, looking for directions, pulls up at a bus stop where two Englishmen are waiting. "Entschuldigung, koennen Sie Deutsch sprechen?" he says. The two Englishmen just stare at him.

"Excusez-moi, parlez vous Francais?" The two continue to stare. "Parlare Italiano?" No response, "Hablan ustedes
Espanol?" Still nothing. the Swiss guy drives off, extremely disgusted.

The first Englishman turns to the second and says, "Y'know, maybe we should learn a foreign language...."

"Why?, What for?" says the other, "That bloke knew four languages, and it didn't do him any good!"

I was very sorry to hear your friend was not feeling well and is in the hospital. I enjoyed the post today. I have done several posts on language use they are fun. I loved the vid with the brit/italy way. That was funny. I have used the quote that you used at the end of your post and it never looses it's punch. Wonderful thought for today. I really liked yesterday post also. I believe I tried to comment but had a problem. I enjoy my visits here very much. Thank you for putting so much time and effort into your posts. Yes, I have reported several times about the knife culture that exists in Great Britain, so I am not surprised that the people there are considered to be Europe's most loutish. (Note: How can a nation with such a culture call itself GREAT Britain? Maybe it should change its name to So-so Britain?)

Geography: I was a whiz at in school. Knew all the states and state capitals. Knew all of the countries and their capitals.

At one time.

It all began unravelling in my early 30s. All because of my working for an international company. Who'da thunk it?

- first time I flew cross country, I eagerly anticipated seeing the state lines; but as we flew along, I saw not one border I'd come to know on endless US maps. What a case of false advertising.

- with my working at the company "HQ" of an international corporation, we had an impressive stock of flags from other countries, which we'd put up on the poles entering the facility, when the appropriate representatives visited. I was once asked to do an inventory of the flags (the original one was apparently lost); using an almanac, I determined we had the flags for 48 countries, one of which was Upper Volta. Except at that time, there was no longer an Upper Volta. That flag would never fly. Bummer.

- In '91, my world geography further atrophied as the USSR became the UFFR (Union of Fewer and Fewer Republics).

Now I'm happy to get from Point A to Point B ;)
